The name Zahara comes from the Andalusian Arabic, meaning "wild and rocky"; and the almadraba, the ancient art for fishing tuna in the strait, gives this place its last name.

However, Zahara de los Atunes is not just a destination for lovers of the sea. The natural environment of the town also invites land activities, such as hiking or quad biking.

The Parque Natural del Estrecho, part of the Mediterranean Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve, is truly a spectacle and is eagerly waiting to be discovered. The coasts of the park are bathed by two seas, in the east by the Mediterranean Sea and in the west by the Atlantic Ocean.

The Strait of Gibraltar, which joins these seas and separates Europe from Asia, is a transit point for migratory birds and marine mammals. Precisely the union of the two seas turns this space into a privileged enclave that houses an exceptional biodiversity of extraordinary interest.

In the park you will also enjoy beautiful beaches such as the Playa de Los Lances Natural Area, or the Duna de Bolonia Natural Monument. Cultural heritage is another key element of the park. An example of this is Baelo Claudia, the famous ancient Roman city that is located in Bolonia.
